MODULES
In Transition Year each form complete a rotation of modules. Throughout the year we will complete modules such as ; Nutrition, Mindfulness, Public Speaking, Pottery, Careers, Art Appreciation and Health&Hygiene. At the end of each module we must do a project which I will post her on my blog.
Nutrition
In Nutrition we have been studying performance enhancing drugs as well as nutrition. We studied the different types of performance enhancing drugs and what they do to our bodies. I found this a very interesting topic as I explored different athletes and the drugs that they used. I was not suprised by the short term effects of these drugs but the long term risks and effects seemed endless. I completed my project on performance enhancing drugs. I focused on Diuretics, Beta blockers and Stimulants as well as researching athletes such as Lance Armstrong who's drug abuse has ruined their athletic careers.
Mindfulness
I found that the module of mindfulness was good for me as it taught me how to focus on the moment and be calm using mindful techniques. During the module we discussed how the mind works, how we need to learn to train it and how to train our minds. I feel that this module is beneficial as it teaches you how to focus on the 'now' instead of thinking or worrying about the past or future. It also teaches how keep calm in times of stress using mindful techniques.
Careers
Throughout the module of careers we looked at a number of different career options that we could possibly do in the future. We used our 'careers portal ' books to take personality tests and other quizzes to determine which career path would be best suited to us. For our project we had to research our dream job. I researched a career in Law.
Leadership
In the leadership skills module, we focused on the 5 character traits needed to become a successful leader. We watched one movie and one documentary based on Nelson Mandela throughout the course of the module. The movie “ moneyball” have a great perception and understanding about the characteristics involved in being a good leader and the challenges faced as a leader. For the project, we had to pick two leaders to compare and talk about individually. I chose to do my project on Nelson Mandela and ... Leadership was a very educational and worthwhile module in my opinion because it outlined clearly what it takes to be a leader which will prove to be very important to us all in the future
I.T
Information Technology was one of the three modules I took part in, in Term 2 of Transition Year. Mr Stanley gave us this module class to catch up on blogs and other assignments. This was a great way for me to stay on top of my work!
Art Appreciation
During term 2, my form 4A took part in art appreciation as part of our module rotation. Although I found the module quite boring and found it difficult to focus and struggled to get involved in the class, I really enjoyed completing the project where my artistic side was displayed. The subject of our project was very broad, whereby you could choose any artist to focus on. This could be a painter, filmmaker, sculptor, or any other artist. I chose Film as my art form and focused on my project on the Pixar Film Studios. I received a 100% grade on this project.
Public Speaking
One of the modules that all Transition Year students take part in is Public Speaking. Each student at the end of the module must prepare a speech using what they learnt in the Public Speaking classes. I wrote my speech about Social Media as it's a subject that has ongoing controversy of whether it benefits our society or not. I really enjoyed this module as everyone in the class was able to voice their opinions about different topics. I was graded an A for my speech dealing with the topic of Social Media.
Health& Safety
Due to a huge amount of musical rehearsals taking part during the Health and Safety module, I missed a lot of the classes which is unfortunate. In Health and Safety, we learnt about hazards and completed worksheets
Pottery
One of the modules I took part in this year was Pottery. I really enjoyed pottery as it was something that I had never done before and was a completely new experience for me. During the course of the model I completed a monster and a name plate l. Unfortunately my name plate broke in the oven which was disappointing although I still have my other two pieces which is good. Unfortunately due to the musical rehearsals I was unable to paint Edith of my pieces but I am planning on painting the. after the TY interviews before TY night when I have a bit more free time. I really enjoyed the pottery module but am disappointed that due to the musical I missed most of the classes.
Forensics
Forensics was in my last rotation of modules. During my classes in Forensics with Ms. Aylmer I took part in an exercise to determine what kind of finger prints I had on each of my ten fingers. I learnt the different types of finger prints: loop, whirl and arch. In class we watched a few documentaries about how forensics plays its part in a crime scene investigation and the tools used to try and find out who committed the crimes. I learnt all about criminal investigations and the study of bones and how its used to build a profile on a person. I learnt you have an over 95% chance of identifying a persons age, sex and race from studying their skull alone. I really enjoyed my time in this module.
Politics & Society
In this module, we focused on the 1950s and 1960s. We completed worksheets on the Hollywood stars of the 1960s and the 1950s. We talked about the politics of the era.
